How we research, write, and maintain these guides.

Last updated: November 5, 2026

Our goal

We want someone with no technical background to be able to fix a common printer problem safely, using only what they already have: the printer, its manual, and their computer or phone.

How guides are written

  • Safest steps first. Steps are ordered from the least risky and quickest, such as restarting, checking cables, or changing a setting, to the more involved, such as reinstalling drivers or cleaning parts.
  • Current operating systems. Instructions follow the menus in current versions of Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Android, and ChromeOS. Where a menu differs between versions or phone makers, we say so.
  • General, not model-specific. Printers share the same basic parts and settings, so the guides describe those. When something depends on your exact model, we point you to the manual.
  • Plain language. No jargon without an explanation, no exaggeration, and no pressure.

Safety rules we follow

  • We always tell you to switch off and unplug the printer before you reach inside it.
  • We warn about hot parts such as laser printer fusers, and about ink and toner that can stain or irritate.
  • We never recommend opening a power supply, bypassing cartridge security chips, installing unofficial firmware, or permanently turning off security features.
  • We tell you plainly when a problem needs a qualified technician or a warranty claim.

Sources for software

We only recommend drivers, apps, and firmware from official sources: your operating system's built-in updates, or your printer manufacturer's official website or app. We never link to third-party driver download sites.

Independence

No manufacturer, retailer, or repair business pays for, reviews, or approves our content. Any advertising shown on the site is kept separate from the guides and never changes what a guide recommends.

Corrections and updates

Operating systems and printer software change over time. We review guides regularly and update steps when menus or features change. The date at the top of each guide shows when it was last checked.
