Printers without a full screen use lights to communicate, and a blinking light means something needs attention or is in progress. The catch is that patterns differ between models, so the same flash can mean low ink on one printer and a jam on another. This guide explains how to read your printer's pattern, which blinking is normal, and how to work through the common causes: paper, cartridges, open doors, wireless connection and stuck jobs. It finishes with a safe restart and what an all-lights pattern means.
What you might be seeing
- The power light blinks and nothing prints
- An ink, paper or warning light flashes
- The Wi-Fi light keeps blinking
- Several or all lights flash together
Common causes
- Normal activity
- Slow pulsing often means the printer is warming up, processing, cleaning or asleep.
- Paper problems
- No paper, a jam or a size mismatch usually triggers the paper or attention light.
- Cartridge or door issues
- A missing, empty or unrecognized cartridge, or a door left open, makes the related light flash.
- Wireless status
- A blinking Wi-Fi light usually means the printer is searching for a network or in setup mode.
- Internal error
- All lights flashing together usually signals an error the printer can't clear by itself.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order and test a print after each one. Most people are done within the first few steps.
Read the pattern exactly
Note which lights blink, their color, whether they flash slowly or quickly, and whether they alternate or flash together. Then find the light pattern table in your model's user guide, available on the manufacturer's official website or in its app. The same symbol can mean different things on different models, so guessing from another printer can send you the wrong way.
Give it a few minutes
If the printer has just been switched on, had a cartridge replaced or received a job, a slowly blinking power light usually means it's busy. Wait two or three minutes without pressing anything. Never switch the printer off while it's updating firmware, which some models show with a blinking pattern, since interrupting an update can leave it unable to start.
Check the paper
Make sure the tray holds paper matching the size set for it, sits below the fill line and is pushed fully in. Open the access doors and the output area to look for a jammed or torn sheet, and remove it gently. Many printers then need you to press Resume or OK, often marked with an arrow or check symbol, to clear the light.
Seat cartridges and close every door
Open the cartridge or toner door and make sure every cartridge is in its correct slot, firmly seated and free of protective tape. Remove and reinstall any that may not have clicked in. Close every door and cover firmly, including the rear access panel and the scanner lid on all-in-one models, because a sensor that thinks a door is open keeps a light flashing.
Sort out a blinking Wi-Fi light
A blinking wireless light usually means the printer is trying to connect or is in setup mode. Check that the router is on and other devices are online. If the Wi-Fi name or password changed recently, reconnect the printer with its wireless setup option or the manufacturer's app. A light that blinks briefly at power-on and then turns solid is normal.
Cancel stuck print jobs
A job the printer can't process can leave the attention light blinking. In Windows 11, open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners, select the printer, open the print queue and cancel everything. On a Mac, open System Settings › Printers & Scanners, select the printer and click Printer Queue to delete jobs. Then press the cancel button on the printer itself.
Restart the printer cleanly
Turn the printer off with its power button and wait until it shuts down completely. Unplug the cord for a minute, then plug it straight into a wall outlet or surge protector and switch it on. This clears temporary errors. If all lights flash together again after the restart, the printer has an internal fault; write down the pattern and check it against the official user guide.
How to keep it from happening again
- Keep the light pattern table from the user guide handy
- Close every door and cover firmly after loading paper or ink
- Let start-up and firmware updates finish undisturbed
- Reconnect the printer promptly after changing Wi-Fi settings
Common questions
Why is the power light blinking while nothing happens?
A blinking power light usually means the printer is busy, warming up, canceling a job or asleep. If it keeps blinking for more than a few minutes with no activity, a job may be stuck or an error may be waiting. Clear the print queue on your computer, then restart the printer.
What does it mean when all the lights flash at once?
On most printers, every light flashing together signals a general or service error that the usual fixes haven't cleared. Restart once with the power cord unplugged for a minute. If the pattern returns, look up that exact pattern for your model in the official user guide, which says whether service is needed.
Can a blinking light mean a cartridge isn't recognized?
Yes. The printer may reject a cartridge that's in the wrong slot, still has tape on it, has dirty contacts or isn't designed for that model. Reseat it and gently wipe the contacts with a dry lint-free cloth. If it's still rejected, try a cartridge sold for your exact model.
