When a printer will not pick up paper, you typically hear the motor run while the sheet sits still, and the printer then reports that it is out of paper or jammed. In most cases the pickup rollers have lost their grip, the stack is loaded where they cannot reach it, or the driver is pulling from a different tray than the one you filled. This guide checks loading first, then settings, then roller cleaning, and finally worn parts.
What you might be seeing
- The rollers turn but the top sheet does not move
- An out of paper message appears with a full tray
- Paper only feeds if you push it in by hand
- A laser printer keeps asking you to load the manual feed slot
Common causes
- Dusty or glazed pickup rollers
- Rubber rollers collect paper dust and harden with age, so they slip on the top sheet instead of gripping it.
- Stack loaded incorrectly
- Overly tight guides, too few sheets, or paper not pushed fully in keeps the roller from reaching the stack.
- Wrong paper source or tray setting
- The job may be sent to a different tray, or the tray's stored size and type may not match the job.
- Slick media
- Glossy photo paper and coated stock can be too smooth for worn rollers to move.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order and test a print after each one. Most people are done within the first few steps.
Unplug the printer before touching the rollers, and on a laser printer that was just printing, wait about 30 minutes before reaching deeper than the tray area. Never spray liquid directly into the printer.
Reload a small, fresh stack
Remove all paper from the tray and load fifteen to twenty sheets of plain paper from a newly opened ream. Fan the sheets first so none cling together, then square the edges. Push the stack in until it stops against the back of the tray, or down into a rear slot until it rests on the bottom.
Set the guides to touch without squeezing
Slide the side guides in until they just meet the edges of the stack. Guides pressed too hard make the paper bow upward so the roller slips, while loose guides let the sheet twist and stall. Set the length guide to the paper size marking if your tray has one, then push the tray in until it latches fully.
Check the paper source in the driver
In Windows 11, open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners, select the printer and choose Printing preferences. Find Paper Source or Source and choose Automatically Select or the tray you loaded. On a Mac, expand Media & Quality in the print dialog and check Feed from. A job sent to an empty tray or manual slot will never pick from the full one.
Match the tray settings on the control panel
Many laser printers and some inkjets store a paper size and type for each tray, usually in a paper setup or tray settings menu. If a tray is registered as A4 while the job asks for Letter, or as heavy paper for a plain paper job, the printer may skip it and wait for a manual feed instead. Set each tray to match what is actually loaded.
Clean the pickup rollers
Turn the printer off and unplug it. Find the pickup rollers, usually rubber wheels above the tray opening or at the bottom of a rear slot. Moisten a lint-free cloth with distilled water, wring it until barely damp, and wipe each roller while rotating it with a fingertip so you clean its whole surface. Let the rollers air-dry for a few minutes before testing.
Run the built-in roller cleaning cycle
Many inkjets and some lasers include a roller or paper feed cleaning routine in the control panel's maintenance or tools menu, or in the manufacturer's app. Follow its prompts exactly, since some versions run with the tray empty and others ask for a few sheets of plain paper. Run it twice if the rollers were very dusty, then try printing again.
Replace worn rollers
Feel the pickup roller. A healthy one is slightly tacky, while one that is hard, cracked or shiny will not regain its grip from cleaning. On many laser printers, tray pickup rollers are user-replaceable and sold as official kits listed in the user guide. On most home inkjets, the rollers sit deep inside the chassis, so replacement is a service repair.
How to keep it from happening again
- Wipe the pickup rollers whenever feeding becomes unreliable
- Keep paper sealed so it stays flat and dust-free
- Update tray size and type settings when you change paper
- Refill the tray before it runs down to the last few sheets
Common questions
Why does paper feed from one tray but not another?
Each tray or slot has its own pickup roller, and they wear at different rates. If one source works and another does not, the cause is almost always that tray's roller, separation pad or seating rather than the driver. Clean the roller for the failing tray and check that the tray clicks fully into place.
Can humidity stop paper from feeding?
Yes. Dry air builds static that makes sheets cling to each other and to the tray, while damp air makes paper soft and limp. Both make it harder for the roller to lift the top sheet. Fanning the stack and keeping paper wrapped until you need it helps in either case.
Should I use rubbing alcohol on the rollers?
Some manufacturers permit a small amount of isopropyl alcohol, but distilled water is the safer default because repeated alcohol use can dry out rubber over time. Check the user guide on the manufacturer's official website for your model. Apply any liquid to the cloth, never to the roller directly, and let it dry before printing.
