Printer Printing Blank Pages

A printer that feeds paper normally but delivers blank pages is telling you the paper path works and the marking system does not. On an inkjet, that usually means ink is not reaching the page; on a laser printer, a toner cartridge or drum is often not set up properly. Sometimes the cause is on the computer instead, from an empty page in the document to a mismatched driver. This guide helps you find which side the problem is on, then fix it.

What you might be seeing

  • Paper feeds normally but comes out with nothing on it
  • A blank sheet appears between printed pages or at the end of a job
  • Ink or toner levels look fine, yet nothing prints

Common causes

Tape or seal left in place
New cartridges can have tape over the nozzles or vents, or a pull-out toner seal.
Dried or clogged printhead
Ink can dry in the nozzles of an inkjet left unused for weeks, blocking it completely.
Toner cartridge or drum not seated
A laser cartridge or drum that is not locked in place cannot transfer toner to the page.
Empty cartridge
Level readings are estimates, and a cartridge can run dry before the warning appears.
Document or driver issue
Empty pages in the file, a separator page or the wrong driver can produce blank sheets.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order and test a print after each one. Most people are done within the first few steps.

Safety

Turn off and unplug a laser printer before removing the toner cartridge or drum, and keep the drum out of bright light. Do not touch inkjet nozzles or cartridge contacts with your fingers.

  1. Print a page from the printer itself

Use the control panel to print an internal page such as a configuration report, status page or print quality report. That page comes from the printer's own memory, not from your computer. If it prints correctly, the hardware works and the cause is in the document, app or driver, so move on to the computer-side steps. If it also comes out blank, start with the ink and toner steps.

  2. Look for real blank pages in the document

Open print preview and scroll through every page. An extra page break or empty paragraph at the end of a word processing document creates a genuine blank page, and a spreadsheet print area set too large can do the same. Print a few lines from a simple app such as Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on a Mac. If that prints, the original file is the source.

  3. Remove tape and seals from new cartridges

If blank pages began right after a cartridge change, take the new cartridge out and look for leftover protective tape, plastic caps or pull-tabs. On inkjet cartridges, tape usually covers the nozzle area or an air vent on top; avoid touching the nozzles or electrical contacts as you check. Many toner cartridges have a long seal strip that must be pulled from the side before installing.

  4. Reseat the toner cartridge and drum

On a laser printer, turn it off, unplug it and open the front cover. Remove the toner cartridge, plus the drum unit if it is separate, and rock the cartridge gently side to side a few times to spread the toner. Reinstall the drum and cartridge, pressing until each locks. A loose cartridge cannot transfer toner, which leaves pages blank.

  5. Check and clean inkjet nozzles

From the printer's maintenance menu or the manufacturer's app, print a nozzle check or print quality diagnostic page. If entire color blocks are missing, run a printhead cleaning, then print the check again. Repeat two or three times at most, because each cycle uses ink. After a long idle period, letting the printer rest for several hours between cleanings gives dried ink time to soften.

  6. Turn off separator pages

Blank sheets between jobs in Windows can come from a separator page. Open the printer's Printer properties, go to the Advanced tab and select Separator Page; the field should be empty. In Printing Preferences, also check for a cover page or job separator option, which some business drivers include, and turn it off.

  7. Reinstall the correct driver

A driver for another model or the wrong printer language, such as a PostScript driver on a printer that does not support it, can send data the printer accepts but cannot render, leaving the page empty. Delete the printer from Printers & scanners, reboot, then add it back with the driver Windows Update offers or the complete driver package for your model from the manufacturer's official website.

How to keep it from happening again

  • Print a color page at least once a week on an inkjet
  • Check for tape and seals every time you install a cartridge
  • Switch off with the printer's own button so the printhead is capped
  • Keep the driver matched to your exact model

Common questions

Why does my printer print blank pages after sitting unused?

Inkjet ink dries in the nozzles during long idle periods, especially in dry rooms. The printer still moves the paper, but no ink reaches it. A few cleaning cycles usually bring it back. Switching off with the printer's own power button, rather than at the wall, lets it cap the printhead to slow drying.

Can a third-party cartridge cause blank pages?

It can. A cartridge that is not recognized properly, was filled incorrectly, or uses a different seal layout may install without an error and still print nothing. Recheck the instructions that came with it, and test with a cartridge you know works if you have one.

Why is only the first page of every job blank?

A consistent blank first page usually comes from the job, not the hardware. Check for a cover or separator page in the driver, and look at print preview for an empty first page. If it happens from every app on that computer, reinstalling the driver usually clears it.

Still not fixed?

If internal reports also print blank, the problem is inside the printer. On an inkjet, a printhead that does not recover after repeated cleanings may need replacing, which is simple on models where the printhead is built into the cartridge. On a laser printer, try a different toner cartridge or drum. If known-good supplies still produce blank pages, the transfer or high-voltage system may be faulty, and warranty service is the safest route.
